About The Artist
This is my second review of Nothing but Real, you can catch my review of Lost in the World here. I love their industrial sound and the link to cinematic music. It’s bold, fresh and was thrilled when the band sent me their latest release!
Every so often a new music discovery arrives that feels like it carries an entire world within it. French independent artist Nothing but Real has created exactly that. Their new release Scars and Burdens stood out instantly with its rich mix of progressive rock, metal, electro inspired textures, and a deep cinematic universe that surrounds every track they release. They are an emerging music project that blends storytelling, emotion, and world building in a way that feels rare in today’s landscape. It is the kind of track that reminds listeners why curated playlists and platforms like Groover matter. They help us find artists who are fearless in their creativity.
Track Spotlight
Scars and Burdens is a dark and expressive rock ballad that carries both weight and hope. The band describes it as a confession with a closed heart and that feeling is present from the first moment. There is a powerful sense of atmosphere, with heavy guitars, controlled aggression, and an emotional tension that feels ready to crack open at any second. The blend of English and French vocals adds even more character. It creates a natural cinematic lift that suits the themes of struggle, redemption and identity.
The storytelling within their music is impressive. Nothing but Real uses their own lore and characters to guide the emotional arc. Scars Crow, a shadowy figure from their universe, seems to haunt the edges of the track. It deepens the sense of drama and makes the music feel connected to something bigger. Fans of Linkin Park, M83, Imagine Dragons, or industrial influenced rock will instantly feel at home here.

My Curator Notes
What really stood out is how Scars and Burdens shows growth from their previous release Lost In The World. There is still a cinematic influence in their writing but this new track leans into a more direct rock sound with flashes of new metal. This shift works beautifully. The guitars are a standout element. Clean in tone yet commanding with a confidence that lets them sit right beside the vocal. Many bands struggle to find this balance but Nothing but Real makes it feel effortless.
The songwriting and arrangement deserve special attention. The move from verse into chorus is one of the strongest moments. The syncopated hits between drums, bass, and guitars build the tension perfectly before the chorus arrives with real force. The bilingual vocal approach adds colour and gives the track a unique identity. The spoken French middle section carries a mood that could fit inside one of Zimmer’s darker cinematic works. It brings the narrative universe to life and adds emotional gravity.
The production is polished and impactful. Every element sits clearly in the mix with no clutter. The blend of atmosphere and heaviness is handled with real precision. Nothing but Real show that independent artists are fully capable of delivering world class production when vision and craft align. For artists reading this, it is a reminder to carve out your own identity. Lean into the parts of your sound that feel authentically you, because that is what helps your music stand out in new music discovery spaces.
