About The Artist

Every so often a new music discovery arrives that stays with you long after the final note fades. Friendship Commanders, a heavy melodic duo from Nashville, delivered exactly that with their track DEAD & DISCARDED GIRLS. As an independent artist pairing, they combine emotional weight, creative depth and a powerful message that makes the song impossible to ignore. Their work stands out in the world of emerging music and perfectly reflects why I love uncovering new voices for our curated playlist and Groover features.

The song is taken from their new album BEAR, released on Magnetic Eye Records. The band are currently touring the West Coast and continue to build deserved attention across respected outlets such as Rolling Stone, Brooklyn Vegan and Metal Injection, each recognising the duo’s ability to blend intensity with clarity and purpose.

Track Spotlight

DEAD & DISCARDED GIRLS is one of those pieces that instantly stops you in your tracks. The sparse and intimate opening sets a moody scene before the vocal enters with clarity and emotional control. It pulls you straight into the story, which explores empathy, harm and the experiences of girls who often go unheard. The track was inspired partly by the tragic 1997 murder of Reena Virk and partly by vocalist Buick Audra’s reflections on how empathy is often withheld unless we recognise ourselves in someone else’s struggle.

The song expands from a quiet opening into a crushing wall of sound that carries real force. Heavy guitars, bold dynamics and beautifully controlled vocals create a listening experience that feels both personal and cinematic. The lift into layered vocals near the end adds a sense of reflection that contrasts with the intensity of the earlier sections. It is a strong example of how contrast can turn a great track into a memorable one.

My Curator Notes

What struck me first about DEAD & DISCARDED GIRLS was the emotional honesty sitting right at the heart of the writing. The message is powerful and handled with real care, and it reminded me how music can shine a light on subjects that need to be heard. Right from the first few seconds I felt pulled into the world they were creating and I could sense the intention behind every choice. It is the kind of track that reminds me why I enjoy championing independent artists.

The vocal arrives with a confidence that instantly lifts the mood into something more contemporary and focused. I love the way Buick Audra never sounds like she is reaching beyond her comfort zone. Instead she stays controlled, expressive and completely honest. The small vocal break at two minutes and twenty nine seconds is a perfect example of how a human detail can make a performance even more compelling. It is the sort of nuance I always encourage emerging music creators to embrace.

The shift from the quiet opening into the intense and aggressive middle section is handled with real intention. Heavy music becomes far more impactful when it uses space, tension and release, and Friendship Commanders show a deep understanding of that. The moment that wall of sound arrives, the track steps fully into its identity and hits with a force that made me sit up straight. It reminded me how much I love this kind of dynamic writing.

Another moment that stayed with me is the lift around three minutes and forty five seconds when the layered vocals create a sense of calm right after the storm. That contrast adds emotional depth and fits beautifully with the theme. It gives the listener space to reflect while still holding on to the intensity of everything that came before. These kinds of choices show maturity in both writing and production and they make the track deeply engaging on repeat listens.

I can say without hesitation that I love this band. Friendship Commanders know exactly who they are and they lean into their sound with conviction. Fans of heavy melodic music, grunge tinged atmosphere or emotionally charged songwriting will want more after just one listen. As a curator, it is always a treat to find artists who combine storytelling, dynamic production and fearless honesty, and Friendship Commanders are a perfect example of why new music discovery is so rewarding.
