Hélianthème – Lost in the World

Eight band members, four women and four men, on stage holding guitars, double bass, violin, and accordion, bathed in warm yellow stage lighting, all facing forward.

Artist: Hélianthème

Track: Le Pêcheur and Le Dôme De Verre

Style: Folk, Rock and a dash of sea-shanty goodness!

About The Artist

Today’s new music discovery comes from Hélianthème, a folk group formed in 2022 whose sound blends popular tradition, poetry and the grounded energy of street performance. Their name comes from a small sun-loving flower, which feels fitting for the bright and human quality in their music. What first caught my attention was the authenticity in their story. After more than one hundred street concerts across France, the group is now preparing to release their debut EP in June 2025 titled Épique la Baleine. Their songs feel lived-in, warm and full of community spirit, which is exactly why they stood out in my Groover curator inbox.

Track Spotlight

These two tracks carry a strong sense of storytelling and shared experience. The melodic writing is inviting and proud, rooted in folk tradition without feeling old fashioned. The shift from bold opening chords into softer, warmer verses creates a natural emotional journey. The blend of male and female vocals gives the music a timeless charm and a feeling of unity. Even for listeners who do not speak French, the intention and emotion are instantly clear. The performances are tight yet relaxed, the kind of interplay that only comes from musicians who know each other deeply.

Production wise, the tracks show a thoughtful mix of traditional methods and modern approaches. Recorded at Audioscope by Firgun Recordings under the direction of Charles Domange and Tom Fonty, and mastered in Argentina by Carlos Laurenz, the sound is warm and balanced with a natural sense of space. Nothing fights for attention. Every part supports the story.

For context, their EP includes a reimagining of the traditional whaling song Pique La Baleine, originally from the nineteenth century. Their version leans into childlike playfulness rather than the usual gravity associated with maritime songs. This gives a clear glimpse into the originality behind their artistic identity.

My Curator Notes

Aside my curator notes, I absolutely LOVE this band and there music is infectious, authentic and as a taste curator it appeals to me massively!

Hélianthème reminded me how powerful folk music can be when it is approached with sincerity and a strong sense of identity. What stands out most is the way they balance tradition with imagination. Their melodies feel rooted in familiar folk language yet they carry a freshness that comes from real curiosity and joy in music making. You can hear the influence of their street performance background in the way the parts breathe together. Nothing feels forced. The rhythm has a natural lift and the vocal blend feels like a shared voice rather than a spotlight moment.

I was also struck by the care they put into shaping emotional movement within their tracks. The bold opening chords set a tone that immediately pulls you in. As the verses land, the palette softens and you feel the story open up. The combination of male and female vocals adds depth and creates a sense of unity that suits the themes of hope and courage. These choices show a real understanding of how arrangement guides storytelling.

For emerging artists, there is a valuable lesson here. Hélianthème show that personality is as important as technique. Their sound is not built on complexity for its own sake. It grows from conviction, connection and a shared vision inside the group. When musicians trust each other, the music gains a natural strength that listeners can feel instantly.

I also admire their production decisions. The EP was created using both traditional methods and modern approaches, which gives the tracks a clear identity without losing warmth. Everything sits in the mix with purpose. Nothing distracts from the narrative. For artists in similar genres, this is a reminder that production should support the emotion of the song rather than compete with it.

Hélianthème are a great example of what happens when creativity, history and community all meet in the same space. Their music carries a story that feels both personal and widely relatable, and it is exciting to see a group who can connect so easily with listeners far beyond their own region.
